"TRANSLATING AN AREA-BASED SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEPRIVATION INDEX INTO CLINICAL PRACTICE"

We propose to validate an area-based socio-economic risk index that is 1) available for all patients without data collection burden for clinicians, 2) easily interpretable by clinicians, and 3) validated using statewide Health Information Exchange (HIE) data. This is an important first step in our larger goal to improve population health in Rhode Island by providing clinicians with important information on outside contributing factors to health and health behavior. In a future proposal we also plan to implement an intervention study to assess the effect on healthcare utilization of incorporating an area-based risk index into information available to clinicians.
