National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C)

What is N3C?

The National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) is an open-science community focused on analyzing patient-level data from many clinical centers to reveal patterns in COVID-19 patients. N3C is stewarded by the National Center for Data To Health (CD2H) and the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), with significant contributions from many partners including the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program, Institutional Development Award Networks for Clinical and Translational Research (IDeA-CTR), and thousands of researchers from hundreds of participating institutions in the US and abroad.

What is the N3C Data Enclave?

The N3C Data Enclave is a secure platform through which the harmonized clinical data provided by N3C’s contributing members are stored and made accessible to researchers. The N3C Data Enclave contains real-world data from patients who were tested for COVID-19 or whose symptoms are consistent with COVID-19, as well as data from individuals infected with pathogens such as SARS 1, MERS and H1N1, which can support comparative studies.

As of April 25, 2023, the N3C Data Enclave includes data for:

How is Advance-CTR involved with N3C?

As part of the national IDeA-CTR consortium for N3C, Advance-CTR was among the original eight IDeA-CTR sites to support rapid contribution of COVID-19 data to N3C. In addition to contribution of these electronic health record (EHR) data, Advance-CTR has been engaging researchers with N3C through events and communications with the IDeA-CTR N3C Consortium, providing leadership for the N3C Education and Training Domain Team (ET-DT), and supporting collaborative research involving N3C data.

To learn more about current IDeA-CTR N3C research projects and publications, visit the N3C page on IDeA-CTRNet. Also see recordings and slides from the IDeA-CTR N3C Investigator Engagement Event: Jumpstarting Access to Clinical Data for COVID-19 held in February 2022.
