Managing Mentoring Relationships: Mentoring UP

Advance RI-CTR’s Research Mentoring Program invites early-career faculty to join us at 8:30am on August 13th, 2026 at 70 Ship Street in Providence for a half day Mentoring UP workshop followed by a networking lunch at 1:00pm, co-hosted by the Career Development Award Peer Mentorship Group (CDAPMG). Learn how to optimize your experience with and maximize the benefits from your mentoring relationship with often more senior faculty mentors while connecting with peers from across Rhode Island.

Workshop Details

The Mentoring UP workshop is designed for early-career faculty to develop skills to proactively manage relationships with their mentors. This interactive workshop helps early-stage investigators better understand themselves and their needs and effectively navigate relationships and work climates to ensure their professional needs are met.

Covered topics include:

  • Enhancing communication with mentors and aligning mutual expectations
  • Securing the guidance needed to achieve independence
  • Advocating for targeted professional development to help achieve career goals
  • Enhancing Work-Life Integration

The training will be delivered in-person by Melissa McDaniels, PhD, Principal Facilitator, Scientist and Associate Executive Director of the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison..

About Your Luncheon Co-Hosts

The Career Development Award Peer Mentorship Group (CDAPMG) offers a resource for individuals on career development awards or similar awards. The program facilitates peer mentorship through networking events, peer grant review sessions, and an online forum to ask questions and provide insights into resources or other helpful advice whether just starting a CDA or looking to transition to being an independent investigator.
