Patrick Vivier, MD, PhD

Biography

Dr. Patrick Vivier, is the Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Rhode Island.  The College of Health Sciences includes outstanding educators, researchers, clinicians and students in seven departments, including communicative disorders, health studies, human development and family science, kinesiology, nutrition and food science, physical therapy, and psychology, as well as a clinical neuroscience program. 

Dr. Vivier is a pediatrician and health services researcher, with a focus on addressing health disparities.  He is a member of the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR) and the American Pediatric Society (APS).  He has extensive experience in public health education and has served as a site visitor for the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

Prior to joining the University of Rhode Island in January of 2024, Dr. Vivier was the chair ad interim of the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, the director of the Public Health Program, and a member of the senior leadership team for the Tufts University School of Medicine.  Prior to joining Tufts, Dr. Vivier was a faculty member at Brown University for many years, where he was awarded the Royce Family Associate Professorship in Teaching Excellence.  Dr. Vivier served in a range of leadership positions during his time at Brown, including as the founding director of the Hassenfeld Child Health Innovation Institute, the director of Interdisciplinary Education Programs for public health, the director of the Clinical and Translational Training Programs, MPH Program director and the director of the Community Health Clerkship.  He also previously served as the director of the Division of General Pediatrics and Community Health at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Vivier received his AB in Medical Anthropology from Brown University, followed by medical education through the Brown-Dartmouth program, receiving his medical degree from Brown University.  He completed his residency in pediatrics at Rhode Island Hospital/Women & Infant’s Hospital/Brown University.  Following his residency, he completed a health services research followship program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, receiving his PhD in the Department of Health Policy and Management, in the health services research track.  As a junior faculty member at Brown, Dr. Vivier participated in the Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program.
